NOTES - RWANDA AND CONGO

My neighbor Judy worked in the Congo for many years teaching nursing. (I think she was there 25 years.) Many of her students are now nurses and doctors and many teach in the nursing school. When she first started teaching, most of the teachers were people from the West, mostly the U.S and Europe. Now most of the teachers are local people. Judy says that it is important that local people have a chance to be the leaders of their own schools and hospitals.

Rwanda and the Congo are neighboring countries, and she has visited and worked in Rwanda also. Some of her former students now live and work there.

Her most recent visit was this year, and there are two photos from the visit below, as well as some pictures that show some of the things she has told me about.

Also -- one of the things she told me after her trip was about the new technology in Africa. Over the years, many places in Africa have not had electricity or phones or enough well water. Now, many cities and small towns are setting up solar energy (instead of gas and oil-fueled electrical plants) and cell phone towers (instead of landline telephones) and new water systems. In other words, they are skipping over some of the old technology and going straight to new, cleaner, more advanced technology.

Here are some pictures that give a glimpse of what is typical now -- solar panels on roofs of modern and traditional buildings; offices for high tech computer businesses; cellphone towers and cellphones everywhere. Also here is a picture of a small hospital like the one Judy worked with, getting a solar panel for the roof.
