Drawing and Painting

Clock Tower, by Mary L.

  1. Color. Use colored pencils or watercolors to blend primary colors - yellow, blue and red - to make all the colors you need for a drawing or painting.

  2. Shape. Learn to draw the basic shapes - cube, sphere, cone and cylinder - and use these shapes in your realistic drawings.

  3. Line and Wash. Try a line and wash style, using pen and watercolor pencil or pen and watercolors. (Many book illustrations use this style...for example, look at the color versions of the Winnie the Pooh books.)

  4. Perspective. Draw a picture using perspective (lines get closer together and items get smaller in the distance).

  5. Different styles... Compare your different styles of drawing - realistic, abstract, and symbolic. Which do you prefer? Can you do all three?

  6. Different media... Try three or more media for drawing and painting - pencil, pen, colored pencil, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, or other methods. Draw the same picture using different media.
