In this badge, you learn how to do home repairs and maintenance.
- Repairs. Do at least TWO home repairs at home ... fix a toilet, patch a wall or floor, fix loose screws or knobs on doors or cabinets, paint a wall, or help refinish furniture.
- Help Someone. Do a home repair for someone else - a relative, neighbor, or nonprofit agency.
- Electricity. Take a field trip to your basement! With a parent or other adult, look at the circuit breakers or fuse box and find out what they do. Find out how you could shut off the electricity in your house. Find out when and why you might turn off the electricity and talk about safety rules for working around electricity.
- Read the Manual! Look over the manual for a camera or home appliance. Pay special attention to the troubleshooting guide. What kind of questions and answers do they have? Also pay attention to any pictures that show the different parts of the appliance. Can you match the parts in the picture with the real thing?
- Who Do You Call? Or Do-It-Yourself? What do you do if the washing machine overflows? A sink is clogged? You smell gas in the house? A smoke alarm won't shut off? Can you fix it yourself? Or who do you call?
- Save Energy and Water. Do something in your house to save energy or water ... such as put in an energy-saving lightbulb, weatherstripping around doors or windows, or putting something in the tank on the back of the toilet to reduce the water flow.
